For now here is a rundown of the most common fibers on the market:

Dyneema has a slightly different molecular structure than spectra and higher breaking strength in the larger diameters. It displays slightly better wear characteristics in heavy use areas, but has more elasticity than Honeywell's Spectra 1000. This fiber is popular in Europe and is gaining popularity in the states. Hopefully supply will increase and price will drop. Examples of cordage containing Dyneema; , Amsteel Blue, Warpspeed, Superbraid, Ultrex, LOUPS.

Vectran- a Liquid Crystal Polymer fiber is another gold color line that is very popular for the low stretch applications on the boat. This fiber is very low stretch, and has a high breaking strength, low creep and is good in tight bends and good chafe resistance. This fiber is very popular for control lines and lines requiring extremely low stretch such as halyards, sheets, guys and even standing rigging. It has an excellent track history and is used on many boats. Examples of cordage containing Vectran; Validator II, Challenge Braid, Crystalyne, Vectrus, Yaletail.

PBO- Zylon PBO is the strongest fiber listed and most expensive, but has some undesirable traits. The PBO fiber actually degrades in light- even in the shop. So the rope has to be stored in a box, and only installed on the boat for regattas. Any dings in the cover need to be repaired immediately as the sun will quickly degrade the line. However PBO actually makes for a incredible high performance cover for anything that works on a winch. (Due to the current price per pound of Zylon, PBO may stand for poor boat owner). Examples of cordage containing PBO; Progen II, Pobon.

Technora- an aramid style fiber from Japan that has been around for many years now, it is generally gold in color, with a black coating for U/V resistance. It is frequently used in a blended line with spectra to help fibers from chafing itself on bends. Examples of cordage containing Technora; Ultra Tech, Aratech.

Dacron or Polyester- general grade line for applications not concerned with stretch. Most cover of lines are constructed of polyester also. As with everything there are different grades available to the line manufacture, which affect the color retention, sheen, wear and U/V and sun degradation. Examples of cordages containing Dacron; Yale Yacht Braid, XLS, Most standard covers,

There are also many combinations of the fibers being used, especially on the cover. On high load lines Nomex, Technora, Spectra, Kevlar and PBO are being used to prevent heat build-up. Running backstay lines frequently melt the cover when releasing there high loads. There are also different coatings which help with the U/V, mold and chafe, and general longevity. The new fibers and their applications are changing all the time. Rigworks would be glad to answer any questions related to optimizing your running rigging.
